๐ฌ Interview with Iryna
Tell us a little about yourself and your family. (Where you're from, how long you've been in the area, kids' names/ages, fun facts!)
My name is Iryna. And my husband Ven and I moved to the U.S. 10 years ago from Ukraine. We had 3 daughters in 4 years and they are our biggest blessings.

What inspired you to start your business (or get into your field)?
I received my music degree in Ukraine and were too scared to teach in the U.S. until one day Pam, the founder of Modesto Academy of Music & Design, approached me and offered piano teaching position. Long story short, in less than three years we were working together on me taking over the business since Pam was ready to retire. With her trust and guidance, I was encouraged to make sure that this place continues to serve the community.
What does a typical day look like for you as a mom and business owner?
You know what they say, I did not want to work 9-5, so I decided to own a business and work 24/7. It definitely helps that I can bring my children to work, so while I am busy paying bills, submitting payroll, and working on marketing, they are destroying one corner of academy at a time. ๐ That’s pretty much sums it up of how chaotic and overwhelming my schedule can be.
What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?
Seeing our students’ achievements. And being able to be a part of their success and development. We are honored to be able to lead their talents and provide creative space where they can explore art, music, programming, robotics, and more!

What challenges have you faced balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and how do you handle them?
Guilt. Guilt is a huge part of being a mom. Being a working mom brings that even more. When I am not working, I feel like I am putting other members of the team in difficult position, and when I am working I blame myself for not being present with my children. But I am learning to combat it with prayer and faith. Trusting God that I am just a steward of his resources, and he trusted me with this for a reason.
What advice would you give to other moms thinking about starting their own business?
Do it if you see a bigger purpose other than money because when there’s not much of it you would still fulfill your purpose, you would still find a reason to continue. Also, don’t think that you need to be biz savvy. I am very bad with numbers and tech, I struggle with crippling anxiety and indecisiveness, yet I learn to take one step at the time and learn as I go.
How do you and your family like to spend time together when you're not working?
I like to think we are outdoorsy and I try to follow a 1000 hour challenge (look it up, it’s amazing). We love going to parks, and explore nature! I rest in nature, and charge in the sun :-)
๐ Thank you, Iryna, for sharing your journey with us and for being such an inspiring force in Modesto’s creative community!
